A ribbon's natural softness on the high end takes the edge off pick noise and bright strings — but Royer's offset-ribbon design keeps the body open and detailed. Steel-string acoustic ends up sounding the way it feels under your hands.
The R-12 is phantom-powered with active electronics built in, so it drives long cables, plays nice with any preamp, and puts out enough level to use into a budget interface without a separate inline booster. No special preamp required.
Onboard ‑15 dB pad and 100 Hz high-pass filter handle close micing, percussive playing, and harsh rooms. Suspended in the RSM-SS24 it rejects floor rumble and traffic; on a boom stand it'll outlast everything else in the locker.

This might be the best guitar sound I have ever captured. I highly recommend the Royer R-12 and can't imagine not having these mics in the locker for recording guitars and drums.
The R-12 might be less expensive than Royer's flagship models, but any cost savings certainly haven't come at the expense of quality. This is a very fine active ribbon mic indeed.
Dare I say I like the less expensive R-12 model more than my R-122 active ribbon? I just might for electric guitar applications. They certainly live up to the "tough ribbon" marketing tagline.
